Mercyhurst University’ Religious Studies Department bestows the St. Oscar Romero Award on individuals it recognizes who live out the call of faith and justice in extraordinary ways, honoring the legacy of Archbishop Oscar Romero. Molly Burhans was the recipient of this award in 2023 and delivered an associated lecture before the ceremony. The lecture highlighted impactful work at the intersection of faith, sustainability, and social justice. In her talk, she discussed how mapping and geospatial technologies can be used as tools for environmental stewardship and community empowerment. Burhans shared her experience with faith-based organizations in using land and resource management to advance justice and sustainability.
