The Future of a Sustainable Church, part of The Future of Church Property conference was hosted by the Fitzgerald Institute for Real Estate at Notre Dame University in November 2022. In her talk, Burhans discussed the intersection of sustainability, finance, and church property management. She explored innovative strategies for faith-based organizations to manage their land and assets in ways that promote ecological restoration, environmental justice, and community well-being. Burhans also addressed the financial opportunities and tax risks associated with church properties, providing insights on how to optimize land use while minimizing potential liabilities. Additionally, she highlighted the importance of record digitization and efficient workflows, drawing from her experience with Goodlands projects to demonstrate how data-driven solutions can streamline land management and support long-term sustainability. Through this integrated approach, she emphasized how the Church can align its properties with broader social and environmental goals while ensuring financial resilience.
